12/29/2023 0 Comments Flux brace trailer![]() ![]() IDK how many amps you can push thru a given wire, but I'd turn it up and slow it down. If you're not sitting down, it can be a pain. You have to operate a pedal with one foot, hold the torch with one hand and then hold the rod with the other. I only have two setups, TIG and Oxy and the TIG is a bit rough when you're under a truck, or standing up. That's why I bought a TIG, you add whatever filler you want whenever you want to. I'm guessing if the wire is too thin, you'll just burn it off before you get flow in the base. IMO, it's very fast and it's great to not need 2 hands and a foot, but you have to have the adjustment so that you get the heat you need thru the size of wire that you have. I've only done wire feed once and really didn't like it. IDK how much strength is lost because of lack of flow in the base metal, but given that it's a trailer, I'd probably hit it with a temp that would clearly melt the base. With wire feed, you must add wire before any heat is transferred. With a TIG, you can force the based to flow before you add any filler. This is one of the reasons I got a TIG instead of a wire feed or stick. ![]() They never made the frame hot enough to flow. I bought a used truck with a 5th wheel hitch and when I removed it, the "welds" broke off the frame and the frame was still intact. The lower one seems to have 2 or more flow marks along the top, but I can't see any on the lower part.īasically what happens is that you can have molten metal that flows onto the other metal (usually the base metal) but the other metal isn't hot enough for them to flow together. What I call flow marks are those waves where the base metal has actually moved. The left one looks like it got more penetration than the lower one, but I really don't see any "flow marks" on the lower weld. It looks like penetration could be an issue. IDK if you remove the two parts and remove the paint between them or not, but I would have done that as well as cleaned and welded all the way around. ![]()
